A skylight's first job is to brighten a room that has no good wall to put a window in. Interior stairwells, back hallways, bathrooms and north-facing rooms all gain more from overhead light than from anything you can do at eye level.
Its second job here is to survive winter. A skylight in this valley carries snow load, sheds meltwater and takes hard freeze-thaw cycling all season. That is a different specification than the same unit in a mild climate, and it is worth getting right the first time.
The clearest view and the best long-term surface. Glass stays optically clear where plastics can yellow or haze with UV exposure over the years, and it can carry a Low-E coating to cut heat gain and fading.
Very high impact resistance, which matters where something could come down on it. Lighter than glass and available in domed shapes.
The traditional domed skylight material. Cost effective and light, and a common choice on flatter roofs.
The two things that go wrong are leaks and fogging. A leak is usually the flashing or the curb rather than the skylight itself, which is why it is worth having someone look before assuming the whole unit needs replacing.
Fogging between the panes is the same insulated glass seal failure that happens in windows, just harder to reach. The glass unit has failed while the frame is often perfectly sound.
