Windows

Why settle for average when you can have expertly crafted windows at an affordable price? Windows are more than an aesthetic element — they provide your home with warmth, light, cooling, and security. Glass Masters has provided windows and doors to the Wood River Valley for over 36 years, featuring the Kolbe VistaLuxe, Ultra, and Forgent lines.

Repair the glass, or replace the window?

This is the question most people are really asking, and the answer is often cheaper than they expect. A window is a frame and a glass unit, and the two fail independently. When the glass fogs or breaks but the frame is sound, we replace the glass unit and leave the frame in place. That costs far less than a new window and there is no trim work, no paint and no disruption to the opening.

A full window replacement makes sense when the frame itself has gone, when the window no longer operates, or when you are upgrading a whole elevation for performance or appearance. We will tell you honestly which one you are looking at. Being told a repair will do is a better outcome for everyone than selling a window that was not needed.

What we see most

Fog or haze between the panes

A modern window is two panes of glass sealed around a spacer with dry gas between them. When that seal fails, humid air gets in and condenses where you cannot wipe it. The window is not broken, the insulated glass unit is. We replace that unit and keep your frame.

A crack running across the glass

Cracks spread, and freeze-thaw swings in this valley accelerate it. A hairline in November is often a full break by spring. If it is still holding, tape is a reasonable stopgap while the replacement is ordered.

Glass that shattered into small pieces

That is tempered safety glass doing its job. The replacement has to be tempered too, made to size, which is why measurements matter.

Drafts, cold spots and ice on the inside

Sometimes a failed seal, sometimes single pane glass in an older valley home, sometimes a window at the end of its life. Worth identifying which before spending money on the wrong fix.

What goes into an insulated glass unit

Two panes of glass are held apart by a spacer bar around the perimeter, and the cavity between them is sealed and filled with dry air or argon. Inside the spacer is a desiccant that absorbs any remaining moisture. As long as the seal holds, the cavity stays clear and the air gap does the insulating.

A Low-E coating can be added to the glass, a microscopically thin layer that reflects heat while letting light through. In this valley it does double duty: keeping heat inside through a long winter, and cutting the glare and fading that comes with mountain sun at elevation. On a south or west elevation it makes a noticeable difference.

New windows through Kolbe

When replacement is the right call, we are an authorized Kolbe dealer. VistaLuxe is the contemporary line, built for large expanses of glass with minimal frame. The Ultra series pairs extruded aluminum exteriors with wood interiors, and Forgent uses a hybrid material for clean lines at a lower price point. We also carry Optimum architectural steel and All Weather aluminum. The brands page has more on each.
